The central plain of Mallorca, Es Pla, is a fertile area and used to be the centre of Mallorcan life as almost everything needed to sustain the population was produced here. The sea and sand focussed tourist boom has largely ignored Es Pla and the old agricultural Mallorca remains.
Porreres, once an important medieval town, is a quiet place somewhat off the beaten track, and the Finca Son Mercadel, being about 5 kilometres south of the town, is even more so. Although the old finca buildings have been renovated, and modern conveniences and comforts installed, the warm, rustic flavour of a family run working farm has been retained. It's within easy striking distance of some of Mallorca's best beaches, golf courses, and other places of interest.
