Description
The path through the Biniaraix gorge is the 'king stage' on the famous GR 221 long-distance trail that runs right across the Tramuntana mountains. You should definitely do this if you're hiking in Mallorca. It's an unforgettable experience We kick off our six-hour hike at the iconic Bodega Biniaraix bar. Passing the cute wash house - once the social meeting place for gossip in the village - we recharge with a beautiful view of Sóller and Biniaraix, building up mental strength for the climb that starts here. We're using the old pilgrim's path that links Sóller to the pilgrimage site of Lluc. From here, you'll climb almost 2,000 lovingly restored stone steps for two hours through the gorge, which sometimes narrows to just 6 meters. The path is really easy to walk on and has a nice width. In autumn, after it's rained, water flows almost everywhere along the route. Then it's also worth taking a short detour to the Gorg de Ca'n Cati waterfall. Sometimes you can see people on a canyoning tour rappelling down there. A fountain, fed by water from the higher Fuente del Verger spring, gives us a chance to refill our water bottles before we keep going along the spectacular gorge scenery. Some folks also compare it to a big natural amphitheater. Either way, you'll be amazed by this awesome natural beauty! Just before the Coll de L'Ofre mountain pass, we turn right and have another 60 minutes of climbing ahead of us. The path starts through lush dissgras vegetation, then turns into a typical mountain trail that's easy to walk on. With a bit of luck, you might even spot a donkey or two crossing your path. Once you reach the top of the 956 m high Cornador Gran, you can enjoy the spectacular view from the 'Mirador Xim Quesada' viewpoint towards Sóller, the Alfàbia mountain range, and the central Tramuntana, which includes the highest peak in Mallorca, the Puig Major: a top-notch photo opportunity. After a well-deserved break, we head back to Biniaraix the same way. On the way down, we can now relax a bit and enjoy the view.Includes
Guided hike with a certified and local mountain guideImportant Information
- On the 12 km route, you'll climb over 800 meters in altitude. The climb isn't technically tough, but you should be in decent shape. The paths are well-maintained and far enough from the abyss. I suggest you pack some hiking poles. You should start with a supply of 1 liter of water. You can refill your water bottle with spring water halfway through the hike For the break on the mountain, you should have enough food with you. I'd recommend a sandwich, fruit, or dried fruit. It can get really windy up on the mountain. Don't forget to pack a fleece and windbreaker, and maybe a hat too. The temperature differences between the valley and the mountain can be huge.
