Top Ten Spa venues in Mallorca

It’s easy to feel uncomfortable or insecure when visiting a spa  - let’s face it, we’re not all gods or goddesses!  Good spas are all about you, and they start relaxing you and making you feel special from the moment you arrive.  Naturally, you expect the surroundings to be a bit special, and to have a good selection of facilities and treatments to choose from, but the most important things are centred on you.  Friendly and professional staff, clear instructions, feeling spoilt but getting value for money - they are all key areas. Because there are so many spa facilities in Mallorca, some good, others not so good, we’ve tried to identify some that we think are among the best on the island. We’ve also tried to offer a geographical spread , as well as a variety of types (coast/mountain/country, traditional and modern, and so on).  It’s not always about the grandest facilities, so we’ve included some venues  that may have small spas but where their location, general ambience, and staff create something special  – places that say  ‘’I really want to go there’’.

Our list is in no particular order, and it may be added to or amended from time to time!  See the map at the bottom of the page for the locations of our top ten spas in Mallorca.

The Vespasian, Reads Hotel, Santa Maria

We spent an hour with Simone at Reads Hotel and were totally energised after meeting someone who is so passionate about her product, and who genuinely wants her clients to get the maximum amount of pleasure out of their spa visit.

Simone did an enormous amount of research before the construction of The Vespasian spa a couple of years ago and it really shows.  From the moment you walk in to the spacious, airy reception area, you embark on a fluid journey.  Start the thermal circuit in the 100m2 heated indoor with hydrotherapy massage activities and a dedicated swimming area,  complemented by the 6 person Hydro pool.  Then enjoy a sensation shower and acclimatise your body in the 65 degree Laconium before moving on to the Sauna or Herbal Steam rooms.  Take a break and relax in the foot reflexology podium and then complete your circuit in the Ice Room.

The cardio vascular gymnasium, deep relaxation room, three treatment rooms and the VIP Suite for couples complete the facilities.

For the extensive range of treatments, the friendly, professionally-trained therapists use ESPA products, a range of sophisticated treatments influenced by East and West philosophies to bring harmony to the mind and body. The Vespasian Aromatherapy brings you organic and therapeutic treatments that will transport your mind, body and soul to another world.

Indulge yourselves with Treatments for Two in the amazing Moroccan VIP Suite with treatments like the Royal Vespasian VIP couples retreat ‘’El Riyad’’, the Nefratiti Ritual, the Ying Yang Ritual and the Royal Honeymoon Ritual.

Reads offers a range of packages, among the most popular being the new Vespasian 4 night Yoga Detox break, the 4 night Stress Reliever, and the 4 night Body Break.

Outside visitors are very welcome at Reads and several activity classes take place on a weekly basis including Boot Camp, Aqua Fitness and Yoga.  A day visit to the Spa will cost you €25 which includes the use of all the thermal circuit facilities.  Refuel in the Vespasian Lounge with a light spa snack and refreshments, or relax next to the outdoor pool and enjoy the highly-recommended, excellent value Menu del Dia.  Enquire about the special monthly rates of membership of the Spa.

This hotel and spa are very highly recommended for their dedication in making your experience one to enjoy, whether on holiday or visiting for the day.

Nirvana Spa, Hotel Bon Sol, Illetes

The Hotel Bon Sol is a hidden gem in Illetes, just west of Palma de Mallorca.  Blending beautifully into its environment in an amazing location on the edge of the sea, with glorious mature gardens tumbling down cliffs in the south-west of the island, this hotel is welcoming and warm.  It manages to retain the atmosphere of a large villa, and the friendly and personal attention ensures that there is an enormous percentage of return guests.

The Bon Sol has been owned by the same family for over sixty years and now Martin and Lorraine Xamena continue with the original policy of maintaining high standards throughout and great attention to detail.

The Nirvana Spa at the Bon Sol is one of the best facilities we’ve seen and a huge array of face and body treatments is available.  The wet spa with a sauna, Turkish bath and jacuzzi is on one level on the Oceanside and the treatment area with beauty cabins on another. Beauty ceremonies using Sothys Paris products offer a range of facials and specific treatments such as professional peeling and correcting care.  Bernard Cassiere face and body rituals include tribal, anti-stress and anti-pollution chocolate face ritual and a relaxing cocoa ritual.  Sounds good enough to eat!  All the normal beauty treatments such as manicures, pedicures and waxing are available.  Mesoestetic includes the Eye Power Patch achieving greater permeability of the skin, and the tmt electro-medical equipment for anti-cellulite, anti stretch marks, anti ageing and after-sun. The full range of massages includes Ayurvedic treatments, a holistic menu using reflexology, Secrets de Sothys quintessence prestige care for the face and body, Prospa concept body rituals, slimming,  Balneotherapy, and the Phytomer Thalassotheraphy treatments.  Spoilt for choice! Yoga classes are held twice a day.

The hotel gardens are spectacular, the two restaurants serve excellent food, and the Bonsol has its own private beach.  There are various sporting facilities such as mini-golf, squash and tennis.  There is even a tiny little chapel for re-dedications etc.   The hotel facilities are not open to the public in deference to the guests.  So you will have to book a holiday if you are looking for a beautiful venue with good food, good ambience and a truly good spa in all meanings of the word!  Don’t delay - book now – it’s popular!

La Residencia, Deià

We spent one and a half hours at this delightful hotel and we left with smiles on our faces.  The best word I can think of to describe it is "happy".  Everyone we saw, from the reception staff and car valets, gardeners, cleaners and flower arrangers, to the general manager and all the guests, were smiling! The atmosphere is one of total relaxation and yet absolute attention to detail.

With a truly stunning setting in the charming village of Deia on the west coast and surrounded by the majestic  Sierra de Tramuntana mountains, yet just a stone’s throw from the clear blue Mediterranean, this is one of the world’s most renowned hotels.  Deia is a very popular village for artists and La Residencia  has a resident artist and sculptor.  One of their latest projects is the soon- to- be- opened Sculpture Gardens, a unique concept.

The spa is pretty spectacular too, with 14 treatment rooms and an impressive ambience.  Here again, the atmosphere is not intimidating as it can so often be in an up-market establishment, but one of welcome and the feeling that absolutely nothing is too much trouble.

Their range of body treatments include Rose Cocoon, a relaxing massage while you lie in a bed of rose petals, innovative Diamond Magnetic which purefies the body and mind, and Technispa, an exclusive new body machine that treats cellulite and firms and tones the body.  There is a full range of facials and beauty treatments.  And then the alternative treatments:  Craniosacral therapy, a truly calming, deeply relaxing and very special treatment;  Aura Soma consultation, an exciting colour system bringing balance, ease and awareness to all levels of the body, mind and spirit;  and the new Thermal-Hydro-Colour experience, relaxing on the warm flotation couch combined with a gentle heat and use of colour provides an almost "womb-like" state of calm.  Products used are Guinot, Natura Bissé, Opi, Aura-Soma and Aromatherapy Associates.
There are two outdoor pools, an indoor pool in the Spa, steam room, Jacuzzi, beauty salon with outdoor massage areas and a well-equipped gymnasium.

The Spa is open to non-resident guests and a full range of spa rituals is available.

We cannot recommend this special venue highly enough.  Please come and find out for yourself.

Bodyna Spa, Hospes Maricel, C'as Catalá

Such an unusual setting!   The Hospes Maricel is built on a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean and the modern Spa occupies a separate building behind the main hotel. It’s reached through a grassed walkway with the most incredible natural stone walls and you find yourself looking forward to seeing the inside before you get there; you will not be disappointed.  The stone walls, together with the extensive use of natural wood, lend themselves to an almost spiritual sense of arriving in a tranquil place where you just know you are going to be indulged and pampered.

The facilities include a gymnasium, indoor and outdoor heated pool, relaxation room, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, spa gardens and a sun deck with great views if you just want to relax after your treatment.  Yoga classes are also held regularly.

While the majority of the facilities and treatment rooms are located in this area, a unique summer feature of the Bodyna Spa are the natural cave treatment rooms located just above the crystal waters of the Mediterranean!

As with most of the facilities we visited, you are advised to arrive 15 or 20 minutes early for your appointment and spend that time on the vibrating relaxation beds with a cup of herbal tea, fruit juice or water so that you are already relaxed before your treatment starts.

Special Bodyna packages include the Ritual of the Orient, Romantic Getaway, Rejuvenating Retreat and Indulgence.  Other treatments on offer are a range of facials, body treatments, slimming and  firming ritual, waxing, make up application and a hairdresser is available on request.  All products used are supplied by the French company Cinq Mondes.

Local residents can spoil themselves (or buy a gift voucher for family and friends) with a visit to the Spa which includes access to the facilities, a 20 minute massage using essential oils of Cinq Mondes, shower and use of Keiji products, bathrobe, slippers and spicy teas, and a meal supplied by the Senzone restaurant.  The price per person is 79€ vat included and this offer is valid until the end of the year.  An alternative is membership of the Club Bodyna Maricel which costs 83€ for a month and includes everyday use of the facilities plus a massage and discounts on hotel food and beds.

An added product is the unique ‘’Learn to Sleep’’ program, a medical treatment designed with the aim of improving the quality of life of their guests.

This Spa is very highly recommended by the local experts

Valldemossa Hotel Wellness Centre, Valldemossa

With twelve totally individual rooms named after Chopin, George Sand, Ramon Llull, and other famous people who have associations with this idyllic village, the Valldemossa Hotel is an absolute haven, with wonderful views of the mountains and the valley down towards the bay of Palma. The peaceful, relaxed atmosphere at this mountain top hotel works its magic and the attentive staff make you feel like a valued guest.

The spa at the Valldemossa Hotel is not especially large but it has to be included in our top ten because the whole place induces a great sense of euphoric well being. Naturally, there’s an outdoor pool but the heated indoor spa pool, showers and jacuzzi  provide a relaxing alternative any time of the year.    A variety of treatments and massages are available, including back, neck, shoulder and Indian head massage, deep therapeutic tissue, anti-stress, classic Swedish,  the Valldemossa Deluxe aromatherapy treatment, and special body exfoliations and lymphatic drainage.

The spa is open to non residents all year round, but prior booking is advisable.

Port Adriano Marina Hotel, El Toro

One of the newer hotels on the south west coast of Mallorca, the Port Adriano Marina Hotel overlooks the brand new marina which has been purpose built for larger yachts and the whole setting is quite spectacular.  All rooms have a sea view and a balcony.

As you would expect from a 5 star hotel, the Spa, or "Beauty Farm" as it is called,  is pretty impressive. The concept is based on the use of a majority of natural products and they have adopted a new holistic way of Wellness. Their therapists are trained in different arts and are willing to advise on the treatments that best suit their clients.

Facilities include a Sauna, Turkish baths, indoor swimming pool, hydrotherapy, sensation shower, hydro-massage shower , Scottish shower, Vichy shower, solarium, massage rooms, whirlpool, cold water bath tubs and a vast range of treatments.  There is also a really big, well-equipped gymnasium.

Nixe Herbal Spa, Cala Major, Palma de Mallorca

From the moment you step out of the lift into the entrance to the Nixe Herbal Spa, located on the ground floor with direct access to the palm gardens and the sundeck, the first thing you notice is the peacefulness and ambience of the area, almost immediately followed by the smiling faces of the staff members.  It is a very welcoming atmosphere which you find throughout the Hotel Nixe Palace.  Then the next thing you see is the wonderful setting overlooking the sea – you can’t get much better than this!

Built in 2008, the Spa covers 350 sq metres with the Sea and Sensations full thermal circuit as well as treatment cabins and a sports area with personal training.  It was originally designed for hotel guests but is now also open to non residents.  The aim of the therapists is to welcome you as a personal guest, and they pride themselves on good individual attention and personalised treatments.  The hands of Graziella, the Spa Manager, are famous and indeed one visitor has returned each year for the last seven years because he so enjoys the massages!

Popular treatments include rehydration after spending a lazy day in the sun, an extensive range of facials, body exfoliation, hand and foot care, body care and an array of massage techniques including Ayurvedic, Thai, hot stone, and the most popular, the Hawaiian Lomi Lomi massage.   All products used are from Sisley of Paris.

For local residents of Mallorca, a Day Package is available which includes the use of all the facilities plus valet parking for only 20€ a day.  Treatments are not included in this.

This Spa is recommended by us for a great atmosphere, really friendly people and excellent personal attention.

Son Brull Hotel & Spa, near Pollensa

Our intention with this article was to provide a choice of spa venues throughout the beautiful island of Mallorca, so we chose to visit the Son Brull Hotel and Spa in the north of the island, situated in the country outside Pollensa and only ten minutes from the sea.  Originally a monastery which had fallen into a ruin, this property was bought by the Suau family in 1994 and turned into a comfortable, modern hotel while still retaining as many of the original features as possible, such as the enormous double-sided olive press which is one of the few remaining on the island.

The spa is a serene haven whose principle is to identify fully with the island’s natural riches, and therefore all the products used in the various treatments are made by a local supplier from natural sources.

Unique to this spa is the Oliveda olive tree therapy.  As one of the oldest cultivated plants on the earth containing phenols, which protect effectively against anti-radicals and thus against premature ageing, Oliveda has developed this therapy which is used in their body treatments, facials, massages and beauty treatments such as manicures and pedicures.

Other body treatments include Fragrance of Tramuntana (the mountains), an infusion of orange blossom, honey and natural citrus essences;  Sweet Almond and Honey – Mallorcan almonds to soften and tone up your skin with an exfoliating action, local honey and essential oils to sooth and smooth in a wrapA body emulsion made of almonds and honey for moisturising;  Liquid Gold – a warm wrap of Arbequina virgin olive oil followed by a hydrotherapy cream bath and a hot stone massage.

The facilities include changing rooms with showers and lockers, bathrobe, towels and slippers, treatment rooms and outdoor massage beds (summer only), sauna, steam bath, Jacuzzi, indoor/outdoor pool.  The ancient technique of Vital Balance and Hatha Yoga are also available.

This venue is highly recommended by us as a unique experience of total well-being where you can choose to have either a relaxed holiday lazing around the stunning pool and eating well in the excellent restaurant while indulging in the treatments available in the Spa, or alternately combining these facilities with golf, tennis, mountain biking, hiking or lying on the beach.  The choice, as they say, is yours!  Visit the hotel website and see some of the packages they have put together.

Local residents are welcome to use the Spa facilities, the price with unreserved treatment is 70€ per day and 35€ with a treatment reserved.

Bahari Spa, Lindner Golf & Wellness Resort, Bendinat

The hotel is to close in November for three months refurbishment and will reopen in February.  As we hope that while you are reading this article you may be thinking of next year’s holiday, we have included it because we believe that the newly rebuilt Spa will be pretty spectacular, extending the current African theme.

Facilities available now are an extensive wet spa area and a good beauty treatment range.  On offer are Body treatments including Euphoria to exfoliate, detox and nourish, Wrap Sensation, Cacao Therapy to recover your good mood, and a Vine Therapy anti-aging body treatment. The full range of massages includes foot reflexology, Thai, Herbal Serenity Satori  and Hot Stone massage as well as a range of Ayurveda and the special Africa, Africa treatments:  African Elements to caretake your skin, Khanya of Africa, salt exfoliation and massage with marula oil, facial/scalp massage and mud mask, and the African Beauty, exfoliation, full body massage and facial treatment with Argan oil and coconut oil. These treatments are carried out in delightful thatched huts situated outside in the warm fresh air.  If you and your partner want to be pampered from head to toe, book a private spa ceremony for two people lasting almost four hours.  Facials and manicures are also on offer.  The main product used is  Babor.  There are swimming lessons for children, and Yoga classes.

For local residents, a very reasonable day ticket costs just €20 or €10 if used in conjunction with a treatment.  Special offers are available too.

Set amid a Golf course and close to a luxury yacht harbour, the Lindner Golf and Wellness Resort is already immensely popular as it offers so much for the holidaymaker, young and old.  We are looking forward to the re-opening after refurbishment when we will update this article and we believe that it will be one of the most highly-recommended spa venues with its new state of the art facilities.  Book now for next year’s holiday!

Well, that's our take on some of Mallorca's best spa and wellness venues.  If you know of any others, especially in the south and east of the island, that deserve a place here, do let us know!  And, if you visit any of these spas, please leave your review on the pages linked in this article.

Happy pampering!
