Cuevas del Drach
Mallorca
The impressive Cuevas del Drach, (caves of the dragon), are situated on the west coast of Mallorca just 500 metres from picturesque Puerto Cristo. These large caves are well worth a visit - it really is like stepping into another world. The caves are two kilometres long and well lit so you are able to see them in all their beauty. There are thousands upon thousands of stalagmites and stalactites spread across walls of three chambers, Cueva Negra, Cueva Blanca and Cueva Luis Salvator.
The caves are especially famous for the underground lake 'Lago Martel', named after Edouard-Alfred Martel who explored the caves in 1896. The underground lake is supposedly one of the largest in the world and every hour the lights are switched off and three boats are rowed across the lake accompanied by the sound of classical music performed by musicians on the boats. After the show you are able to take a short trip on one of the boats yourself and be rowed down the lake.
