Jaume Mesquida de Mallorca
Mallorca
Porreres in central Mallorca is home to the family winery Jaume Mesquida, founded in 1945, and belonging to the D.O. Pla i Llevant. The fourth generation of the Mesquida family is now running the estate, continuing the process of innovation, maintenance of high standards, and the advancement of Mallorcan wines.
Most of the grapes (90%) used in the winery come from the 22.2 hectares of vineyards owned by Jaume Mesquida around Porreres, the balance being bought in from other producers belonging to the D.O. No chemical pesticides or fertilisers are used and the emphasis is on minimising the environmental impact while at the same time creating a richer soil full of energy and vitality by applying homeopathic remedies and natural processes. Around 10 grape varieties are grown, both local cultivars and more familiar international varieties, and, while experimentation at harvest time is ongoing, the standard range of wines consists of four white, two rosé, seven red, and one each of white and rosé cava.
There are five ways of visiting the winery, ranging from a simple visit and tour, with a tasting of five wines, to a visit combined with a lunch or dinner in the winery. There's also an unusual bike tour of the Son Porquer vineyards, followed by a tasting session of wines and Mallorcan products. Naturally, there is also the opportunity to buy your favourite wine, and you can also resupply from a distance through the online botiga.
For local residents, or folk with a little time on their hands, Jaume Mesquida present wine tasting courses for all levels of wine lover, and the old cellar Ca ses Lluïses, dating from the 18th century, is used to stage concerts, exhibitions and social events.
Opening hours are from 08:00 to 19:00 Monday to Friday, and 10:00 to 14:00 on Saturdays.
