Basilica de Sant Francesc
Mallorca
The extremely severe facade, constructed after lightning damage in the 17th century, disguises the true Gothic nature of the vast Basilica de Sant Francesc. The facade, a great towering wall of sandstone, is relieved by a handsome and intricate rose window and an ornate Baroque doorway.
The interior holds several side chapels and an ornate Baroque altarpiece, as well as the tomb of the famous Mallorcan writer and philosopher, Ramon Llull. However, it is rather dark, even gloomy, but nevertheless worth a visit.
Open daily 0930-1230 and 1530-1800, closed Sunday afternoon, small entry fee. Access through the cloisters on the east side.
