S'Albufereta Nature Reserve
Mallorca
This tiny 200 hectare wetland nature reserve in the north of Mallorca contains diverse natural and semi-natural habitats, and therefore supports a great diversity of species, especially birdlife. S'Albufereta de Pollença is a wetland joined to the sea by the Es Grau estuary. Hydrologically, it is replenished by four water courses - Can Xanet, Del Rec, de la Font del Mal Any, and Can Roig.
The flora is typical Mediterranean wetland, predominantly reeds, rushes and bullrushes. This reserve is very important as a nesting ground for species like the purple gallinule, stilt sandpiper, marsh harrier, sedge & moustached warblers, black winged stilt, and yellow wagtail, while common winter visitors are cormorants, egrets, ducks and geese.
The reserve is a stop off point and a food resource for all the migratory species, both in autumn and in spring. With respect to raptors, the osprey and Eleanor's falcon are relatively common.
When visiting, do remember that most of the reserve is on private property - stick to the perimeter of the reserve and you'll be fine.
