If you think Mallorca is all about beaches and old towns, wait till you check out its art galleries. The island’s art scene is a bit like an insider secret, full of intimate, sometimes quirky spaces that steer clear of the usual tourist crowds.

In Palma, the Es Baluard museum is a must-see for contemporary art with some stunning views over the sea and old city walls. It’s where local artists like Miquel Barceló share space with international names. But don’t just stick to the city. Artà, for instance, surprises with its small galleries offering works by local painters capturing Mallorca’s rugged landscapes in vivid colors. One of my favorite finds was a tiny studio-gallery in the Santanyí area , the artist was there chatting as I browsed original lithographs that felt like the island trapped on paper.

If you visit in late summer, you’ll catch the Jornades Artístiques de Mallorca, when many galleries open their doors late and host live artist talks and workshops. Pro tip: hit a café nearby after a gallery hop, especially in Palma’s La Lonja neighborhood, where you can sip a café con leche and mull over everything you’ve seen. The art scene here breathes with the island’s vibe,relaxed but surprisingly sharp.
